Healing and Finding Purpose

Chuck Waters - Author Photo.png

I’m Chuck Waters. I’m a writer, a long-time massage therapist, and someone who pays close attention to what real life is doing to people, including me. I don’t have a program or a set of answers to hand you. This site is for people living with family estrangement, and anyone trying to find purpose, forgive, and move forward while important relationships remain unresolved.

Living With Estrangement

For over a decade, much of my time was spent in a small studio called The Zen Den, listening to people’s stories while my hands worked on the tension their words couldn’t quite name. That work taught me how much of a life lives below the surface, and how often our bodies tell the truth before we do.

Then came fifty. In a short stretch of time, the roles and structures I’d leaned on for years started to fall away. Work changed. Relationships shifted. The picture I’d been carrying of who I was and how life was supposed to go stopped matching what was actually happening. I didn’t handle it gracefully. There were false starts, stubborn clinging, and a lot of quiet, ordinary grief.

My Story

What Turning 50 Actually Looked Like

There was no single dramatic moment where everything changed. It was more like waking up, over and over, to the fact that the life I’d built no longer fit, and realizing that no one was coming to fix it for me. 50 Things at 50 grew out of that season: one year of taking honest stock, trying new things on purpose, and seeing what happened when I stopped living on autopilot.

Start With My Story

If you’re new here, the memoir is the place to start. 50 Things at 50 is the story of how my life came apart and what it looked like to begin again. You will meet me here first, not as an expert, but as a person trying to live more honestly in the middle of real change.

Why I Wrote It

50 Things at 50

The Year Everything Fell Away and I Learned to Fall With Style

The noticing that led to my writing didn’t start at a desk. It started in treatment rooms, on long walks, and in the quiet moments after something I’d been leaning on disappeared. 50 Things at 50 is my attempt to tell that truth as plainly as I can: what it felt like to lose the life I thought I had, and what began to grow in the space that loss created.

Why Becoming Came Next

Becoming

50 Things at 50 tells the story of how I got here. Becoming is the ongoing experiment in how I’m choosing to live now, one intentional day at a time. Where the memoir looks back on a year that already happened, Becoming asks what it means to keep living that way in the present tense.

Writing 50 Things at 50 didn’t end the questions.

If anything, it sharpened them. I found myself wondering: if this is what one honest year can do, what would it look like to keep paying this kind of attention for the rest of my life? That question led to "The Becoming Project".

The Story Continues

Everything I’ve told you here is part of a larger story. 50 Things at 50 is how I got here. Becoming is the experiment I am living now. Moments of Becoming holds the full stories, and The Becoming Letter gathers them once a month with news from the journey.

I write for people who are living with unfinished endings and trying to find purpose without pretending every relationship can be repaired. If that is part of your life too, I hope these stories help you feel less alone and more able to choose what comes next.

The work here grows from lived experience, including estrangement I have known as a child and as a father. I write with compassion, accountability, and room for people to tell the truth about complicated families.
